1973-1987: Employed by the British Geological Survey, Edinburgh. All my work up to 1986 was funded by the then Department of Energy as part of a Commissioned Research programme on the geology of the offshore UK region. I also gave geological advice to F&CO on matters pertaining to UK territorial claims offshore.

During the last five years or so I was a member of the Basins and Geophysics research group, one of four such groupings within the Department. Following the closure of the Department in 1998 the University agreed a generous voluntary severance package with me.
